Garrett Park Climate Action Network (GP-CAN) GP-CAN is a group of citizens from Garrett Park and surrounding environs who are concerned about climate change and determined to do something about it on an individual basis in our homes and our community. We meet regulary in one of our homes to discuss ongoing projects and prepare for our next event. Last Spring during Earth Week we held an event at the Town Hall that focused on individual actions to combat climate change. There were lots of activities for children, as well as information for adults on simple changes you can make at home that will both reduce energy use and save money. People were on hand to facilitae signing up for wind energy. We are encouraging town citizens to sign up for renewable electricity with the goal of making the town 100% renewable. In response to our encouragement, the Town itself has agreed to sign up Penn Place for green electricity. We hope to get every citizen in town signed up. Click here to see a measure of our progress. Paper or Plastic?GP-CAN has reusable cloth bags for grocery shopping and other purposes, to help you cut down on those terrible plastic ones that litter the landscape and choke wildlife, the kind recently banned in San Francisco and soon to be elsewhere. Paper bags are also a problem requiring the cutting of trees for their manufacture. Our bags are sturdy attractive cloth ones bearing the GP-CAN logo and are a bargain $2.50 each or 5 for $10. Start now to get in the habit of using reusable bags and be ready for the day when the phrase "paper or plastic" becomes an achronism. Contact Kathy Benjamin for details.
